Nikon Europe have announced that it is proudly sponsoring the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage award 2022, for a fourth year. The international competition, facilitated by FotoDocument, provides female photographers with a prestigious platform to celebrate their work, while also highlighting the important social, environmental, economic and cultural issues different communities face.
Distinguished US born and UK-based photographer Marilyn Stafford launched the award in 2017 to shine a light on women in photojournalism and provide the recognition their work deserves. With a prominent career spanning the 1960s’ fashion scenes, to working on high profile documentary projects and photo essays on pre-civil war Lebanon, Marilyn’s work continues to be exhibited, acting as an important demonstration of societal concerns.
The prize of £2,000 enables a professional female photographer to complete a documentary photo essay addressing important issues, while supporting the winner forge their path in the field of photojournalism. Nikon’s sponsorship recognises its continued commitment to foster female talent in the photography industry.
Award founder and pioneering photographer, Marilyn Stafford said: “In a year where my own retrospective exhibition and book has come out, I look back at my life’s work and what stands out for me most is the humanitarian work, whether I was covering children living in slum housing in 1950’s Paris, the refugee crisis in the Algerian War of Independence in 1958, or the aftermath of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, my heart lay with the victims of tragedy and neglect. Although I very much enjoyed shooting celebrity portraits and fashion, I did it largely to support my family and to self-fund my reportage work. I fully understand how women need additional support to make the reportage sustain itself, which is why I founded this award with FotoDocument and we are honoured to be supported by Nikon.”
Annalisa Davies, Nikon UK said: “At Nikon we are committed to supporting the work of incredible female photographers and industry pioneers. We’re very proud to continue our partnership with the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award, which provides an invaluable platform for women behind the lens working to drive global change through inspiring and under-reported projects. We look forward to seeing the entries.”
The competition is free to enter and is now open to applications from female photographers, at any stage in their career and of any nationality. However, entrants are asked to have completed at least one documentary photo essay which showcases positive solutions to the world’s biggest issues at a local or global level.
Submissions will be reviewed and judged by a panel of industry experts including legendary photojournalist, Andrea Bruce and Donna de Cesare, Nikon Ambassador and Co-owner of NOOR Photo Agency. Entries close on May 20th 2022 and the winner announced on June 28th 2022.
