Six Steps to a full diary

No one appreciates a hard sell for future bookings on a wedding day, but there are subtle ways you can impress on guests that you’re the one they should book for their own big day. Donal explains the things you can do to impress not just your client but also their friends and family, while wedding photography superstar Yervant talks about the city walks he undertakes with the bridal party that end up being super chilled out fun.

Make it Personal

If you want to stay fresh and inspired as a photographer and, for good measure, create material that could land you the jobs you really want to take on then personal projects are a must. Tommy Reynolds explains how he injected the enthusiasm back into his business, attracted sponsorship from manufacturers such as Olympus and Panasonic and gave himself fresh material to show to potential clients all by focusing in on the projects that meant the most to him.

Winter Warmers

On dull winter days when there are thick clouds overhead the ambient light can be flat, boring and unflattering. Find out how top portrait professional Paul Wilkinson copes with such a situation while out on location and why he considers winter shoots to be amongst the most rewarding of all. As always he accompanies his lighting masterclass with high quality images and lighting diagrams that make his set ups clear and easy to follow.

Moon Magic

Even in this modern age there’s something extra special about monochrome and Affinity Photo makes it easy to achieve stunning black and white shots from your colour originals. Matty Graham’s latest workshop shows how it’s possible to turn a colour original into a monochrome classic in just a few easy steps and you can catch his video tutorial here.

First Look: Nikon Z50

We’ve had the chance to get hands on with Nikon’s latest lightweight mirrorless model, the Z50. While ostensibly aimed at the high-end hobbyist the latest camera in the Z-series proved perfectly up to the requirements of professional travel photographer and blogger Alex Stead, who took a pre-production model on a challenging photo shoot to the Dolomites. Watch Alex’s video here to find out what he thought about this super compact new arrival.

On test: the Sony a7R IV

The latest eagerly-awaited launch from Sony introduces a sensor that boasts a massive 61 megapixels and a host of high-end pro-spec features. Gordon Laing put the camera through its paces during a trip to New York and reports back on the new camera’s stills and video capability and advises on how much resolution you can really expect to get out of a model that’s currently the highest-resolution full frame mirrorless model out there.
