If you love iconic photography then you’ll appreciate the vintage image by master documentary photographer Larry Fink that features on our latest cover. A classic from his classic Social Graces series, Larry’s work is currently the subject of a huge retrospective in Cologne and we’ve got an exclusive interview with the great man, as well as a selection of some of his greatest work. This issue also sees the launch of our spectacular ‘Professional Photographer of the Year’ competition, the biggest event of its kind that we’ve ever run in the magazine, with over £8000 worth of prizes up for grabs. Top prize is a mouth-watering professional camera, the Panasonic S1R, so tune in and find out how you can put yourself in the running for this, with ten categories also there to be won. Meanwhile hard-working pro Richard Bradbury is explaining why you need to calibrate your cameras if you want to ensure you’re getting the very best results out of them, while software specialist Amy Leigh Atkins is kicking off a new series by providing an overview of the top professional editing packages currently on the market. Cameras tested out this month are the keenly priced and generously specified Fujifilm X-S10 and the Mark III version of Canon’s celebrated C300 cinema camera, so it’s another issue crammed with content that you can’t afford to miss out on!

Issue 181 can also be purchased for  £3.99 as a Digital Edition here or on Kindle Devices  for £3.99 and bought and subscribed to on Apple devices such as Iphone and Ipad on the App Store.

A Touch of Class

Self-confessed left-leaning documentary photographer Larry Fink has cast his unerring gaze on the class divide in the US over the decades and his incisive work is now highly collectible and is the subject of a giant retrospective taking place at the Galerie Bene Taschen in Cologne. We catch up with Larry to find out what he’s currently up to and to hear the fascinating story behind his classic images, shot at polar opposites of the class spectrum.

Professional Photo Photographer of the Year

It’s our biggest-ever competition, with over £8000 in prizes to be won and no less than ten categories to enter! We’ve teamed up with The Societies to create a massive event that’s due to run throughout the whole summer, which is free and easy to enter. Come and find out what it’s all about, check out the amazing prizes and see if you could be a winner!

Puppy Love

Our resident portrait specialist Paul Wilkinson doesn’t just focus on two-legged subjects, he was very much at home when an adorable puppy came to call to have its picture taken for the Hearing Dogs charity. Paul explains how he achieved his exceptional image, not just coping with one very active pooch but also setting up a stunning low-key lighting scenario that needed to be carefully controlled.

Crack The Codecs

If you’re fresh to video production then the whole area of codecs can look like an impossibly technical area to get your head around, but CVP expert Jake Ratcliffe explains in straightforward terms what they are all about and gives some pointers regarding the ones you should be looking at using when you’re setting up a shoot.

Fully Focussed

Professionals live or die by the high standards of their work and if you’ve spent thousands on top quality glass and results are soft then you need to calibrate. Richard Bradbury explains what’s involved and looks at a selection of different ways to solve the problem.

Making the Grade

Achieving the colour you’re after in your final image can be an art form in itself, and you’ll need an understanding of grading and the help of a tool like Affinity Photo’s Gradient Map to be fully on top of things. Matty Graham explains all and you can follow his step-by-step workshop in his easy-to-follow real time video here.

Pick Your Program

There are so many competing editing software programs out there these days that it can be hard at times to pick the right one to work with. Trainer and plug in designer Amy-Leigh Atkins is here to help, by providing an overview of the main packages available and explaining what each of them has to offer and what their pros and cons might be.

Day in the Life – Wildlife

You don’t have to travel to the ends of the Earth to find a variety of brilliant wildlife subjects, as Scottish-based professional Eve Russell proves. She shares some of her amazing locally-shot imagery and explains how her typical day might work out.

Tested : The Fujifilm X-S10

The latest in the popular line-up of Fujifilm X Series cameras is the X-S10, which borrows some of the best features from its popular siblings while carrying an affordable price tag. Andy Kruczek takes a closer look and walks through the all of the formidable bells and whistles that you’ll find on a model that still retails for under £1000.
