Take a voyage of discovery in the latest issue of Professional Photo as we dip into the archives at Iconic Images to reveal a selection of extraordinary previously unseen vintage pictures and contact sheets from celebrated shoots of the past. It’s all come about following the launch of the new Iconic Licencing website and the digitisation of thousands of contact sheets and transparencies from the 1960s and beyond. Take a look at what we’ve found and go and explore yourself! And you’ll do a double take, as we stick with the vintage theme to tell the tale of how one photographer set up a shoot with a model who was the doppelganger of Audrey Hepburn. Our Project this month features the eye-catching work of Jonk, who specialises in capturing the gentle decay of derelict buildings, while Paul Wilkinson is sharing the story of how he occasionally works his passage as a photographer on cruise ships, which gave him the opportunity to set up a shoot with one of the ship’s entertainers on the glorious island of Rhodes. Meanwhile Pro Academy is moving onto its second challenge with a shout out for your best portrait shots, while we’re revealing our latest spot prize winner and giving you one final chance to get your entries in for our mega £8000 Professional Photographer of the Year competition, which closes at the end of August. Our main test this month is the mighty new Sony professional flagship the Alpha 1, while we’re also rounding up the opportunities presented by the burgeoning used kit market, and are talking to a selection of the top second-hand specialists to reveal the best and most economical way to stay ahead of the game by trading up. In other words we’re packed full to bursting as always, so dive in and take a look!

Issue 186 can also be purchased for  £3.99 as a Digital Edition here or on Kindle Devices  for £3.99 and bought and subscribed to on Apple devices such as Iphone and Ipad on the App Store.

Hidden Treasure

We all know the classic pictures from the likes of Terry O’Neill and Norman Parkinson, but have you ever stopped to wonder what else was on that particular roll of film? The new Iconic Licencing website is inviting you on a fascinating journey of discovery.

Almost Audry

Turns out you don’t need to have been a photographer back in the sixties to photograph Audrey Hepburn; well not if you’ve got someone like lookalike Mia Jones to work with in any case. Darren Miles tells us the story of how he met up with Mia and used vintage props to create a period shoot that looks just like the real thing!

Inspired by Conventions

If you’re a photojournalist like Peter Dench you take your inspiration from all kinds of unlikely things, and we hear how conventions in the US have yielded a rich seam of outstanding observational images from a photographer who thrives on the quirkier side of life.

Schools Out

Lockdown effectively shut down schools up and down the country but they still needed to show prospective students what they had to offer. The answer was to commission a virtual tour and Matty Graham tells us how this gave him the opportunity to provide a video service that substantially boosted his bottom line.

Last chance to win

All good things come to an end and you have until the end of August to get your entries in for Professional Photographer of the Year. We’ve also got details of our latest and last spot prize winner Tim Simpson, who is taking home a fabulous Peak Design case worth £180!

Time for a Soft Touch

You need deep pockets to invest in top quality fast lenses that are capable of exquisite bokeh, but Affinity Photo can offer the same look retrospectively and it’s a delightfully simple process to master as Matty Graham demonstrates; watch his real time video here

The Power of Personality

It’s the second round of our exciting Pro Academy series in association with the Nikon School, and this month we’re setting you the challenge to go out and shoot great portraits. Meet the standard and you’ll get a certificate to prove your skills, so come and take a look: click through here to see how to take part!

Dont be Scared to Sell

When you’re just starting out on your professional career it’s only natural to feel awkward when it’s time to start talking about money. Don’t despair though: Lucy Newson is here to show you how to be confident about the value of your work and she’s outlining the pricing strategies you need to be using if your business is to thrive.

Working Smarter with Second Hand

The used kit market has exploded in recent years, and it’s the perfect way to upgrade without the need to splash out huge sums on gear that needs to earn its upkeep. We’ve been talking to a number of the country’s top second-hand specialists to find out more about how to trade up successfully.

Tested – The Sony Alpha 1

The eagerly awaited new flagship model from Sony has hit town and it’s promising to pretty much do it all, albeit at a seriously high-end price. Pro photographer and filmmaker Adam Duckworth takes the camera out on a shoot and reports back on its credentials.
