We’re celebrating the sizeable landmark of reaching 200 issues this month, with a bumper production that’s packed with great content, plus the chance to win valuable prizes by voting for your favourite cover! We’re spending some time looking back at some of the developments that have taken place in the sixteen years since we first hit the streets, which incredibly includes the introduction of the smartphone and the total digital transformation of the professional business, and we’re also recalling some of the great names who have graced our pages over the past couple of decades.

Rising Czech fashion and wedding photographer Simona Smrckova provides the cover for our special issue and tells us how she regularly turns down commercial work in order to retain control over her output, while Kathryn Cooper is sharing her extraordinary images of starling murmations, one of nature’s most glorious and evocative sights.

Elsewhere this month we’re looking at how to mimic the gorgeously vintage feel of Kodachrome using Affinity Photo, Lisa Devlin is recalling her early move into digital photography when she was first starting out in weddings, our ground-breaking audio series is continuing with a look at how to cut the cord if you’re looking to record subjects from a distance and we’re catching up with a skydiver who’s borrowed his camera kit from secondhand specialist MPB.

All this plus a group test of gimbals from Zhiyun, Ronin and Manfrotto, an 800mm shoot-out between a full frame Nikon 800mm and its MFT Olympus equivalent and a full review of the epic Chillblast Defiant laptop, one of the best priced fully-featured editing machines on the market. Lots to catch up on, so feel free to dive in!

Extra content in the Digital Edition includes:

  • Extra spread on the Portfolio feature
  • Extra spread on the Project feature

This issue can also be purchased for  £4.99 as a Digital Edition here or on Kindle Devices  for £4.99 and bought and subscribed to on Android and Apple devices such as Iphone and Ipad on the App Store.

Celebrating Sixteen Years

We’ve reached 200 issues, so the champagne corks are popping and we’re looking back at the momentous events of the past sixteen years since our launch. Take a trawl through for a whiff of nostalgia and cast a vote here for your favourite cover and put yourself in with as chance to win over £600 worth of prizes!

The Personal touch

Our cover star Czech photographer Simona Smrckova is creating an online stir with her striking and highly original fashion work, and she tells us how she’s keen to avoid commercial considerations imposing restrictions on her creative freedom

Dancing in the sky

The dramatic and mesmerising starling murmations that you might be lucky enough to encounter at this time of year have provided a wonderful spectacle for the camera of nature photographer Kathryn Cooper, and she’s added her own special technical twist to extract even more beauty from the scene.

Focus on the Family

Samyang has announced an exciting new line-up of keenly-priced full frame cinema AF lenses that are aimed squarely at the filmmaker on a budget, which come with a strong family feel to deliver perfect continuity. Head here to read more about what the new range has to offer.

Tipping Point

In the latest of our series on acquiring filmmaking skills we’re asking when is the moment when it makes more sense to opt for a dedicated cinema camera rather than a hybrid model that can deliver stills as well? We talk to the experts at CVP to get their thoughts, and you can view their overview, left, of the Sony A7S III vs the FX3, FX4 and the FX9.

Cutting the cord

The days when mics needed to be connected by trailing wires are thankfully long behind us, and a new breed of clever wireless audio systems has opened up a fresh range of possibilities. In our ongoing series that’s looking at how to achieve outstanding audio, our resident audio expert Rick Bronks take a closer look, and you can watch his accompanying video which shall be posted shortly.

Red Hot Retro

The vintage analogue look is massively in vogue right now, and it’s simple to re-create the look and feel of a classic emulsion such as Kodachrome by using the handy toolset that can be found in Affinity Photo. View Matty’s real time video walkthrough here

Sign up for Superpowers

The AI revolution is rapidly gaining momentum, and if, like US viral video superstar Karen X Cheng, you’re inspired by its jaw-dropping possibilities then you’ll find the awesome power of an Nvidia processor will be right behind you all the way. Go here to take a closer look at the potential that’s on offer

Second Time Around

In the latest in our MPB-sponsored series, plucky skydiver Charlie Hope borrows some lightweight MFT kit to enable him to shoot some truly inspiring – and terrifying – air-to-air stills. If you fancy taking part in this series yourself then email us at editorial@professionalphoto.online to let us know what you have in mind

Gimbal Group Test

They’re the must-have accessory for anyone looking to shoot video on the run, and the latest generation of motorised gimbals offer so much more than just keeping your camera steady. We’re rounding up some of the latest cutting-edge launches from Ronin, Zhiyun and Manfrotto, and are asking which product might be best suited for which assignment.

Super Telephoto Shoot-Out

There is more than one way to achieve an 800mm focal length, and Matty Graham has been testing out the mighty Nikon full frame 800mm against the Olympus MFT 100-400mm. The Olympus might be smaller, lighter and cost considerably less, but how does it measure up on a live wildlife shoot?

Sixty Years of Sigma

As we celebrate our 200th issue, we’re taking a moment to reflect on Sigma’s remarkable story, from its 1961 founding to its current position as one of the world’s most respected lens manufacturers. Have a look here to read the full story.

Tested: Chilblast Defiant Laptop

We asked our computer whizz Mike Jennings to check out the latest offering from Chillblast, to see if this British-made laptop can challenge rivals from Dell and Apple for productivity and performance. There’s a lot going on under the bonnet, but is it still capable of doing a great job for a killer price?
