WE ALL KNOW THAT TIMES ARE TIGHT and, along with chasing the work that’s out there, we need to be watching the pennies and making sure the money we’re bringing in goes as far as it can. Crucially, however, that shouldn’t translate into cutting the budget we allocate to marketing and general investment in the business – but there are ways to make sure this precious pot goes absolutely as far as possible. In this, our Affordable Special, we’re looking at ways to achieve this end while still staying competitive. One of the best moves you can make is to check out the flourishing second-hand market. Our feature this month argues this works equally well whether you’re buying or selling, and the savings to be made are impressive. The trick is to decide what your business model really needs and to discard the things you don’t, so if you’re not planning to make movies, for example, you can look at older cameras that don’t have this facility. Also in this issue, we’re looking at the benefit of hiring as opposed to buying the latest kit, the impact that firmware upgrades can have and the lighting gear you can acquire for £1000 (and often much less). If you are looking for a new camera, then it could be that the latest full-frame mirrorless Panasonic Lumix S1R is the model for you, which we’re testing out this month. We’re also covering new filter ranges, tripods and free software in our mini tests. Lots to digest and chew over as always, and I hope you enjoy the read!
