Welcome to Issue 248!

Our dramatic front cover image this month reflects an aspect of the output of the Royal Navy’s dedicated photographic branch, and we’re going behind the scenes to find out more about this highly skilled team of creatives, and to hear about the huge variety of work they take on and how their role is evolving to reflect changing requirements. We’re discovering how someone might work towards becoming a member of this exclusive team, the training that’s given and the kinds of assignments they’re taking on. It’s a real eye-opener for those that might look enviously at some of the amazing subjects to pass in front of the collective lenses of this group of imaging professionals, so make sure to look out for our full report.

On the imaging front we’re showcasing a great set of images shot on safari by master photographer Michael O’Sullivan, working with an assortment of Canon’s long lenses. Michael is sharing his experiences of how to set up testing assignments such as this one, but is also feeding back on the performance of his quartet of optics, including short telephoto zooms such as the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L, through to more rarefied glass, in the form of the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L. It’s a great insight into what to pack for an adventure such as this one, accompanied by some striking imagery, so definitely a story not to be missed!

Richard Bradbury is telling us about an incredible assignment he recently took on, which saw him at the wheel of a £600,000 Lamborghini Revuelto on a drive up to the famous North Coast 500 route around Scotland, where he had the task of shooting aerial images for an upcoming feature in a luxury travel magazine from the passenger seat of a £2 million helicopter. The behind-the-scenes story, and the problems that needed to be ironed out to ensure super-sharp hand-held images from his precarious and bumpy viewpoint, make fascinating reading, and the resulting images are spectacular!

We’re also working with Wex this month to bring you a detailed introduction to shooting video, for creatives who might be looking to add this facility to their regular stills coverage. We’ll be catching up with this go-ahead retailer’s team of experts to pass on their advice regarding which kit to invest in, the best hybrid solutions that will cover you for the widest range of jobs, how to master the tricky business of achieving high quality audio and the ins and outs of editing motion footage. We’ll also be providing full details of how to sign up for a free Wex Pro Video seminar taking place in Manchester in October, so if you’re looking to add motion to the mix you can’t miss this!

Add to all this the regular mix of high-quality pro advice from our talented team of columnists plus all the latest news and launches as they arrive, and it’s another action-packed issue. Stay tuned and I hope you enjoy the read!

After two decades in the industry, I sometimes think I’ve seen it all – then something mad happens and I’m like, no, not even close! When not photographing weddings, I might be in a studio or on location doing a creative editorial or job for a magazine. As if all of this didn’t keep me busy enough, I also have a company called Photography Farm. This is all about educating, supporting, and nurturing other wedding photographers.
