Pro Photo Podcast: Carol Guzy: ICE Arrests at New York Court

This traumatic shot, captured by photographer Carol Guzy for ZUMA Press, iWitness, and published in the Miami Herald, was recently named the overall winner of the prestigious World Press Photo Competition. In his regular Professional Photo podcast Cambridge Jones takes a closer look at an image that personalises the extreme human consequences of this major and divisive issue.

FROM ANY PERSPECTIVE this is a disturbing image, as masked US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detain an undocumented immigrant immediately following his hearing at a court in New York. As he’s taken away his distraught daughters cling to him, and it’s a moment, captured by ZUMA Press, iWitness photographer Carol Guzy and published in the Miami Herald, that personalises a deeply divisive issue that’s long been a huge talking point in the US and beyond.

Such is the power of this shot that it should be little surprise that it caught the collective eyes of the judges in the hugely prestigious World Press Photo Competition, and it emerged as the Photo of the Year winner: check out our recent feature on the winning images for the full story. It’s also the picture selected as the one for our columnist Cambridge Jones to review in his regular monthly podcast for Professional Photo.

Take a listen to what Cambridge has to say, and see if you agree with what some might feel is a slightly contentious analysis of Carol’s winning image. And also click through here to hear Carol’s own recollection of how she captured this traumatic moment, which gives an inside view on the thoughts and actions of a front-line documentary news photographer.
